This video is about how to crop Kalanchoe. Now I will prune Blossfeld's Kalanchoe and show the result of pruning on a stump using the example of Kalanchoe Kalandiv.
0:11 As a rule, Kalanchoe pruning is done after flowering. But it often happens that the Kalanchoe is stretched out and does not bloom. In this case, anti-aging or radical pruning is used, which is also called "Kalanchoe pruning on a stump".
0:34 Kalanchoe Kalandiva. It is a young specimen with yellow flowers. The plant is a single upright shoot with a lush inflorescence at the top. To understand how to properly cut Kalanchoe, you need to know how the development of this plant occurs. At the very beginning of its life, one vertical shoot and opposite leaves grow on it. If the stem is not pinched, then it will eventually end with a peduncle.
The Kalanchoe peduncle is always formed from the apical bud at the apex of the shoot. The second name of this kidney is terminal. With the appearance of the peduncle, the stem can no longer continue to grow upward, because it has passed into the peduncle. Further, the Kalanchoe begins to grow shoots from the axillary buds, that is, from the buds that are in the leaf axils. Here at this yellow Kalanchoe Kalandiva you can see the first axillary shoot that appears. Shoots from the axils of the leaves will also end with a peduncle. In turn, new shoots will also grow from the axils of their leaves. This is clearly seen in this Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana. Thus, over time, the Kalanchoe thickens, the leaves and flowers become smaller and the plant loses its former beauty. Therefore, flowering varieties of Kalanchoe should be regularly renewed and heavily pruned after flowering.
2:23 Pruning the central peduncle
Let's first get acquainted with the peduncle: The formation of buds on the peduncle occurs constantly. New flowers appear and old ones fade. Withered flowers should be removed immediately to stimulate the formation of new flowers. But the peduncle itself sooner or later ends the production of buds, loses its decorative appearance and dries up. So that the plant does not waste energy on feeding this peduncle, it should be removed as soon as the last flowers on it begin to dry out.
3:02 This Kalanchoe Blossfeldian has almost all the lateral peduncles cut off, and the central stem itself with its peduncle stretched out and bare. Nothing will grow on this peduncle. It will dry up. And this is not beautiful. I will delete it now.
4:13 Before pruning Kalanchoe, I do not water it for at least a week. You should also not water the Kalanchoe for several days after pruning. Thanks to this, the cut point dries out faster. After trimming, the cut must be trimmed with a clean tool. I left 4 leaves on the main stem. Because in their axils there are shoots with still good peduncles, but with small leaves. I will only remove this peduncle, because there are already few flowers on it and it is too tall. I remove this peduncle with the first pair of leaves. These leaves at the peduncle are always small. From the axils of the real leaves following them, new, but weak shoots are already growing. Kalanchoe will bloom for some time and give new small flower stalks. But the remaining leaves are too many and too small to give large beautiful flower stalks in the future. Therefore, after a while, when the remaining flower stalks lose their former beauty, I will cut the central stem to the first two shoots. And I will cut the remaining two shoots into a stump, that is, I will leave only 2 lower leaves each. After that, I will leave only one strongest vertical shoot, and delete the rest.
5:58 The rejuvenated Kalanchoe develops more actively and forms a thicker stem. I will try to make a short video about how I will cut the Kalanchoe into a stump.
But now I can show you the result of cutting the Kalanchoe into a stump.
6:15 For this, let's go back to the yellow Kalanchoe Kalandiva. I cut this Kalanchoe very shortly 8 months ago. Here you can see the slice. I left only one pair of the lowest leaves. Shoots began to grow from the axils of each leaf. I left the strongest one and deleted the second one. Here you see the so-called stump. Note that I did not remove all the leaves, but left one leaf at each axillary bud. But now they have grown old and fell off. After all, these are the leaves of the previous generation. Thus, the single shoot grew strong and beautiful.
