Today, the historic courtyard of Tashichhoedzong comes alive with the annual Thimphu Dromchoe, also known as Lhamoi Drubchen. This sacred festival, is a vibrant celebration of Bhutanโs rich culture and spirituality. At the heart of the festival are the mesmerizing sacred mask dances, or cham, dedicated to Palden Lhamo, the chief protective deity of Bhutan. These dances ward off misfortune and ensure prosperity, drawing blessings for all those who attend.Legend has it that Palden Lhamo appeared before the meditating Kuenga Gyeltshen in the 17th century, performing the very dances that we see today. Inspired by this divine encounter, Kuenga Gyeltshen introduced the Dromchoe in 1710, ensuring its place in Bhutanese tradition. The festival is not just a religious occasion; itโs a spectacular showcase of Bhutanese culture. Folk songs, comedic performances, and vibrant traditional clothing bring together locals and visitors, making it a grand social event. As the day draws to a close, the Thimphu Dromchoe concludes, but the festivities continue in just a few days with the grand Thimphu Tsechu, another monumental celebration of spiritual and culturalย heritage.
