Summary
Act 1

The provincial town of Verrière. The carpenter's ambitious son Julien Sorel does not want to continue the family business and work at the sawmill. Abbot Shelan takes him under his patronage. Monsieur de Renal, the mayor of the city, meets the abbot on the street and asks him to find a governor for his children. The abbot introduces Julien to the de Renal family, and he is accepted as governor. The maid Eliza falls madly in love with Julien, but he becomes the lover of Madame de Renal. The rejected girl decides to write an anonymous letter to the mayor. Bedroom of Madame de Renal. There is a knock at the door, Madame de Renal hastily hides Julien behind a screen. Her husband enters. Taking advantage of the moment, Elise gives Monsieur de Renal an anonymous letter she has written. A scandal breaks out, and, to Madame de Renal's despair, Abbot Chelan leads Julien out of the house.

Act II
Abbot Shelan decided to hide Julien in the seminary. The young man is haunted at night by the memories of Madame de Renal. The new confessor of the seminarians, Abbot Castaned, is imbued with dislike for Julien. Seeing that the young man is in danger, Abbot Shelan takes him out of the seminary and sends him to Paris. In Paris, he introduces Julien to the Marquis de La Moly, who takes the young man to him as his secretary. The daughter of the Marquis, proud and arrogant Matilda, falls in love with Julien, but does not want to admit these feelings to herself. At the ball, annoyed by his flirtation with Marshall de Fervac, she sends him a note inviting him to come to her. Julien understands that through Matilda she will be able to achieve a high position in an aristocratic society.

Act III
At the estate of the Marquis, Matilda demonstrates to all her family a beautiful wedding dress that she is going to wear for a wedding. The triumphant Eliza brings a letter that will ruin all of Julien's plans. After reading the letter, the Marquis forever refuses Julien's home. Julien managed to recognize the handwriting of Madame de Renal and goes to look for her. Having met Madame de Renal in the church, Julien without hesitation draws out his pistol and shoots her. At this moment, Monsieur de Renal enters and sees his wife fall. At the trial, Julien blames himself for the crime and condemns the inhuman society in which he lived. He says that his actions, which caused a lot of harm, were dictated by the desire to change his social position and, thanks to his intellectual qualities, rise to the level that he deserves. The crowd is torn between hate and admiration. Julien is sentenced to death. Abbot Shelan visits him in prison. Julien does not want to confess, but is touched by the devotion of an old friend and hugs him. The abbot takes out a handkerchief to wipe Julien's forehead, and Julien recognizes the handkerchief, once presented to him by Madame de Renal. After the abbot leaves, Madame de Renal appears. In shame, Julien covers her face with her hands and huddles into a corner. Madame de Renal calmly walks up to him and pats him on the head. Julien is led to the guillotine in front of the crowd. When he is executed, everyone pity him. Matilda rushes about in grief, while Eliza, having performed her terrible revenge, tries in vain to find compassion. Madame de Renal appears with her hair down and slowly walks forward, unrecognizable. A handkerchief slips from her hand, she falls to the ground and dies.
