There are a few songs which Elvis recorded in the 70's in particular which could be classed as more in the vein of songs that Elvis liked to sing, as opposed to the type that many thought he ought to be recording.
Nowadays, if an established artist decides to cover a well known song, even if it is from a bygone era, most music critics would hardly bat an eyelid, but that was not the case when it came to Elvis in the 70's.
Some songs like 'Hurt' or 'Pledging My Love', pre-dated rock 'n' roll and others like 'She Wears My Ring' or 'Spanish Eyes' were considered among the easy listening types of the early sixties, and none of them were what critics considered Elvis should be recording. Although 'Danny Boy' could also be considered amongst that type, Elvis' delivery and performance of the song, being one of the best of his career, surely make it exempt from that list.
With Al Martino being one of Elvis' favourite singers, it is perhaps of little surprise that Elvis chose to record his 1966 hit 'Spanish Eyes'. On 16 December 1973 at Stax Studios in Memphis, Elvis did just that, together with 'If That isn't Love' and the aforementioned 'She Wears My Ring', and these became the last songs that Elvis recorded at Stax.
'Spanish Eyes' was released, together with those other two tracks, in 1974 on the 'Good Times' album, but before this album had even been pressed Elvis added it to his set list for his next live engagement.
The engagement in question began just six weeks after recording at Stax had finished, in Las Vegas on 26 January 1974. 'Spanish Eyes' was performed at that opening show, and at almost every show throughout the run. Although not recorded as such in the studio, it essentially became a live duet with 'Sherrill Nielsen', who Elvis had stand with a microphone beside him as he sang the song. It should also be noted that the live version contains an extra verse omitted from the studio version.
Much like 'It's Impossible', Elvis obviously recognised that the song was likely to be viewed as perhaps little more than 'a Vegas lounge tune', and never performed it outside of Vegas or Tahoe. It was performed by Elvis live for the final time less than a week into his next Vegas engagement on 24 August 1974, at the Midnight show. This final rendition can be found on the official FTD release 'It's Midnight' and is included in this compilation.

00:00 Version One – 26 January 1974, Opening Show – Las Vegas
This first rendition was the first of around thirty known renditions and it was this engagement which saw the greatest concentration of performances of the song.

03:37 Version Two – 27 January 1974, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
This soundboard version gives a better idea of how the on stage duet sounded.

06:58 Version Three – 3 February 1974, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
10:13 Version Four – 7 February 1974, Dinner Show – Las Vegas
13:24 Version Five – 9 February 1974, Closing Show – Las Vegas
16:32 Version Six – 19 May 1974, Dinner Show – Lake Tahoe
This is probably one of the finest live renditions that Elvis performed of the song and features a different trumpet arrangement than the previous five. All of this despite Elvis appearing to be having trouble remembering the lyrics prior to beginning the song!!

20:17 Version Seven – 23 May 1974, Midnight Show – Lake Tahoe
A nice touch by Elvis, singing the song at request of his then girlfriend, Linda Thompson, for her birthday. Despite being just nine shows after version six, this again features another variation of the trumpet solo!!

23:48 Version Eight – 24 August 1974, Midnight Show – Las Vegas
This was the final live rendition by Elvis, the single known version from this Las Vegas engagement.
Listen out for Elvis shouting 'Ariba' (part of the cry of Loony Tunes character Speedy Gonzales) during the performance!!

As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
