Imam Zaid Shakir, close student of Shaykh Mustafa al-Turkmani for seven years, and Abu Munir al-Sha'ar, his personal attendant, recall their memories of him. Shaykh Mustafa (d. 2006) was both an erudite scholar of the outward Islamic sciences as well as a master of the science of Islamic spirituality. He was trained in the outward sciences by Shaykh Hasan Habannakah (d. 1978) one of the greatest and most influential Damascene scholars of the past century. And he was trained in Islamic spirituality by Shaykh Muhammad al-Hashimi (d. 1961), whose humility, service, and remembrance of God had a profound and lasting effect on him. He shunned sheikhdom, living a life of humble service to students of knowledge, until it was thrust upon him against his will by Shaykh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Shagouri, whose position he inherited upon the latter's death.
