4 REASONS FOR MONOCHROME

1- SIMPLICITY
The reason I like monochromatic palettes is because they are simple. It is easy to develop skills while maintaining a great sense of liveliness. At the same time you’re learning the fundamentals that can be applied to a wider variety of colors - particularly with the Apelles palette.

2- FUNDAMENTALS ARE PRIMARY
In my opinion the best paintings are not great because they were “creative” with color choices but rather show mastery of the fundamentals. They also tend to lack color or at least disparity between colors and instead focus on overall harmony, atmosphere, and most importantly the story!!

3- COMPLEXITY IS UNNECESSARY
The fact is, you don’t need a wide variety of color to make a compelling painting. I would argue that wider variety is actually a disadvantage. It’s more about what you’re doing with the color.

4- ETHEREAL BEAUTY
There’s a certain ethereal beauty in the great reduced color works that actually can’t be achieved with more colors.
