Shikhandi is a character in the Mahabharata. The story of Shikhandi is as follows:
Shikhandi was born as Shikhandini, the daughter of King Drupada of Panchala.
At the time of Shikhandi's birth, there was a divine voice that he should be brought up as a son.
Shikhandi was raised as a man and taught the art of warfare.
Shikhandi got married and his wife insulted him on the wedding night when she found out the truth.
Shikhandi fled from Panchala to commit suicide.
There a Yaksha saved him and changed his gender and gave him his masculinity.
Shikhandi returned to Panchala as a man and lived a happy married life with his wife and children.
Shikhandi's previous birth was that of Amba, the princess of Kashiraj.
Bhishma had kidnapped Amba and wanted to marry her to his brother Vichitravirya.
To take revenge on Bhishma, Amba performed penance to Lord Shiva and received a boon that in the next birth she would be the cause of Bhishma's death.
