Learning to Surf: Execute Turns Immediately!

Surfing Session 296. I went surfing on a Saturday morning. I can’t believe I am almost at 300 sessions now in my surfing journey in just over three years. That is almost twice a week on average in the Boston area.

In this session, I was focused on trying to catch some nice green waves and immediately execute a bottom turn and a top turn once I caught the wave. This allows me to surf on a fairly steep, clean, critical section before it turns to white water. Some of the set waves were taller than the 2-3 feet in the surfline forecast. I had a great time. I caught A frame waves nice and clean and went left and right.

On one nice wave, I did a faded take off and went up and down the wave face. I did at least one bottom turn and top turn combo on each wave. On another wave I was hitting the lip very critically. It was a wonderful day!

On a few waves, I caught the waves late, after the white water broke already. However, I stayed on the wave and let it punch me forward. The white water gave me enough speed to go down the line and catch up with the breaking wave from behind. For example, on one left, I was behind the white water but let it pick me up and I kept on going left as the wave peeled left. Then when I saw the section open up, I tried to twist my board onto the top section of the wave. It felt great. I’ll have to practice doing that more.

I am still working on surfing as much as I can. I am also cross training with laps in the swimming pool, yoga, and surf skating. It has been a lot of fun and I have befriended many other local surfers in the area!
