In 2009 a remarkable oasis emerged in the heart of Uptown Chicago - the Winthrop Family Historical Garden. This green haven celebrated the families who shaped Uptown's diverse culture, and created communal garden space in one of the city's most densely populated neighborhoods. As time passed the garden became overgrown and underused. Through city grant funding, Uptown United and MKSK embarked on a complete renovation. Additional garden plots were added to answer the demand for local and sustainable food production. To bring neighbors together again, an open community space was created. Today The Winthrop Family Historical Garden hosts gardening demonstrations, markets, neighborhood events, and more. Alongside the community garden plots there are performance areas, storage and vending structures, and exhibits. Its renewed design directly reflects the diverse tapestry of residents, and shares the compelling story of the Winthrop Avenue family's history and legacy.
