The Skyline Trail is one of the most exceptional and amazing backcountry backpacking trails I have ever walked. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.

Notes, courtesy the Canadian Rockies Trail Guide:

Shovel Pass was named in 1911 when Jasper's Otto brothers packed Mary Schaffer and a boat over the range to Maligne Lake via this improbable route.
When the party encountered deep snow near the pass, the Ottos carved a pair of wooden shovels from trees below and scratched out a trail through the drifts for their horses. The shovels were erected near the summit and stood for several years as monuments to the arduous journey. (You can view the original shovels at the jasper Yellowhead Museum)
