Wernher von Braun, who played a key role in the Apollo 11 moon landing through the development of the Saturn V rocket, produced his Aggregat 4, or "Retribution Weapon 2" (V2) here from 1944 in the underground complex of Mittelwerk GmbH. A concentration camp was set up specifically for this purpose so that the prisoners were close to the production facility in Kohnstein.
