Interesting facts :

According to the inscriptions on the temple, it was built in the year 982 AD by the Shilahara Dynasty making it the oldest known temple in the Maharashtra coast. (It was reconstructed in 1060 AD).

It is said that Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji visited this temple in the 1415 AD.
The category of the temple is a subset of the Vesara style, a combination of Nagara and Dravidian architecture. A very rare mix of North Indian and South Indian styles.

Unlike most worship places, this temple has a sanctum sanctorum that requires the devotees to tread through a very narrow passage. Interestingly, the passage has 20 steps which lead to the Garbhagriha that is below the ground level.

The sanctum often has temperature lower than what is outside.
The temple has an open roof which is covered using glass to protect the sanctum. This gave the deity and the town the name of Ambarnath as the deity is exposed to “Ambar” or the sky. The name Ambarnath means “The Lord of the Skies”.

The Shiva Linga here is Swayambhu (self manifested).
A legend states that the shrine was originally built by the Pandava brothers. This legend is inscribed in the temple premises.
