These are the top 5 most significant changes happening on YouTube in 2022:

1. Updated Terms of Service
2. Improved YouTube Studio App
3. Internationalization of YouTube channels
4. Automatic YouTube Chapters
5. New monetization opportunities

#1 Updated Terms of Service
Updated YouTube Terms of Service take effect on January 5, 2022. Fortunately, there are no significant changes based on the document preview. Most of them concern wording adaptation to make YouTube Terms of Service easier to understand.

#2 Improved YouTube Studio App
YouTube is constantly working on the Studio App. While there used to be a lot of features missing for mobile devices, YouTube is adding more and more features to match the desktop versions. In 2021, YouTube:

- granted creators access to change the currency display setting on mobile
- added a navigation bar at the bottom of a mobile Studio App
- made returning and new viewer metrics and member metrics available on mobile

We can expect this to continue improving. According to insider information, YouTube plans to update the Analytics on mobile and make them more powerful in 2022.

#3 Internationalization of YouTube Channels
YouTube is trying to increase the reach of single YouTube channels by offering translation possibilities. In 2021 it became possible to translate YouTube comments into more than 100 languages and add subtitles in live streams.

It's possible that already in 2022, viewers would be able to translate live stream subtitles and see translated video chapters.

#4 Automatic YouTube Chapters
Currently, users can add chapters to their videos by putting timestamps in the description. You can learn how to do it in this article. However, not everyone has time or resources to add chapters (especially to long videos). That's why to make videos more user-friendly, YouTube is experimenting with automatically added chapters. You might have seen them under some YouTube videos.

We can expect the algorithms to get better and better and, therefore, more and more YouTube videos to get timestamps. If you want to ensure that they are correct, add them yourself or disable this option in video settings.

#5 New Monetization Opportunities
YouTube is expanding its monetization opportunities for creators. More options are coming where viewers pay directly to YouTubers. Currently, it's possible to sponsor a creator through:

- channel memberships (monthly subscription)
- Super Sticker (tips to creators during live stream)
- Super Chat (tips to creators during live stream)

In 2022, YouTube is rolling out Super Thanks to all creators in YPP - a way for viewers to give money as a thank you for the creator under regular videos. More changes are coming to the YouTube Shorts monetization policies. Currently, creators are paid by the Shorts Fund $100 million.

They can get between 100 and 10.000 USD depending on the performance of their shorts in the last month. In 2022, the Shorts Fund will roll out to more countries, and new forms of advertisement will be available between shorts (like TikTok or Instagram reels). Still, YouTube will need to make significant improvements to compete with the other platforms to win the short-videos game.
