Mino Kaneyama Castle Ruins, was a Japanese mountain castle located in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture. It was designated as a National Historic Site in 2013. The castle was constructed on the summit of Mount Kozukayama, approximately 277 meters above sea level. Its layout followed the stepped fortification style, and it is often referred to as the Kaneyama Castle. The main features included the main bailey, secondary baileys, and multiple enclosures, with the main keep situated at the highest point. The castle’s history dates back to 1537, when Saitō Masayoshi, the adopted son of Saitō Dōsan, built the castle on Mount Karasuyama. Over time, it became the residence of the Mori clan and later the Ishikawa clan. Unfortunately, the castle was dismantled in 1600. The remaining structures include relocated gates, stone walls, earthworks, and a well. The castle’s legacy lives on, and in 2017, it was designated as the 143rd castle in the Continuation of Japan’s Top 100 Castles.

Ranmaru Furusato no Mori, located at the foot of the Kaneyama Castle Ruins, is a lush natural park in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture. Throughout the seasons, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, and autumn foliage. In spring, the mountainside is carpeted with cherry blossoms, and the view from the observation deck, overlooking a thousand cherry trees, is truly breathtaking! It’s Kani City’s top spot for cherry blossom viewing.
