In this honest video, I am opening up about a topic I thought I never had to address - the sudden termination of my 8-year career in Google, and the harsh realities and painful lessons I have learnt since I was laid off.

As someone with over 14 years of experience in both the exciting but unpredictable world of tech and finance, I always expected layoffs to happen at some point in my career. And after seeing my past colleagues get laid off over the years, I had mentally prepared myself of the financial implications of a layoff (things like having an emergency fund, a backup career plan and sufficient savings for mortgage and other expenses)

So while I was fortunate enough to cushion the financial blow of this layoff from Google (in my previous video with many of you had liked), I didn’t expect my emotional and mental health to be impacted even more. We often think (and worry) primarily about how layoffs can impact our financial situation, but no one had warned us that we would also go through a roller coaster of emotions ranging from grief and loss, feeling guilty and blaming ourselves to experiencing anger with the unfairness of it all.

Another unpleasant (and sad) surprise was seeing how most of my work friends were initially not around to support me during such a tough time. It was almost like the moment I left Google, my entire 8 years there was erased and everyone just moved on without me. It was only after a while that I realized they either didn't know how to approach me or they themselves were also overwhelmed with their own layoff anxiety.

And it’s not all doom and gloom. On the positive side, I have learnt to be kind to myself and to others and also received tremendous support and kindness from friends and strangers I never thought would be there for me. I also realize that absolutely no one in the company enjoys doing layoffs and that they are just doing their job, so being angry and bitter would not help get back my job. Burning bridges and pointing accusing fingers also serve no purpose. Instead we are ultimately presented with the opportunity to showcase our kindness and maintain relationships despite this setback.

Lastly in this video, I also covered how finding your next job is going to suck. It is just so difficult to find a job in today’s tough economy when very few companies are actively hiring. I found myself panicking and just interviewing for any and every job out there, and soon I was burnt out and had wasted so much time and energy. So I eventually designed a 30/60/90 day job search framework to better strategize my job search and I have shared this with you in my video as well.

I was initially hesitant to share this experience so openly here on YouTube, but I believe it’s important to discuss the lowlights and tough times of our careers as well. And I hope this video can help anyone (especially more junior employees in the workforce) to better prepare for a layoff. And I hope this video also provides comfort for anyone going through a similar struggle and facing the same layoff anxiety.

So take a breath, this is probably the toughest situation you will ever face in your career. Take the time to be kind to yourself and then reflect on how being laid off could still be a positive chapter in your career and an opportunity for personal growth.

Here’s what I’ll be discussing:

Thank you for your support, and all the best in navigating in these uncertain times. And wish me luck in my next chapter as a YouTuber sharing my stories here!
