Harmful algal blooms are the biological consequence of a riptide of bloom-generating nutrients allowed by law and timid regulation to run off the land, particularly farm fields, and are the source of the nation’s worst water pollution.

Circle of Blue spent five months investigating the causes, revealed some of the promising solutions, and prepared a six-part project, "Danger Looms Where Toxic Algae Blooms.” The project found that ending the scourge of harmful blooms is eminently achievable. It requires much greater accountability by the farm sector to significantly reduce the amount of phosphorus that drains into water. One place to really make a difference is the 2023 Farm Bill, and the billions of dollars that Congress devotes to farm conservation measures that need significant new focus.
