TOPIC: EYE LENS FORMATION/INDUCTION | CSIR NET| DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY

A germ layer is a group of cells in an embryo that interact with each other as the embryo develops and contribute to the formation of all organs and tissues. 3 –germ layers- Endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm. The lens is formed from the outer skin or ectoderm of the head.
3 steps of eye lenses development-Eye field and optic vesicles(OV) formation, Lens placode (LP) formation and Interaction between optic vesicles(OV) and Lens placode (LP)

Pax6 protein appears to be important in making the ectoderm competent to respond to the inductive signal from the optic vesicle(So pax6 expression in head ectoderm/ectoderm/surface ectoderm).Pax6 expression is seen in the head ectoderm, which can respond to the optic vesicle by forming lenses, and it is not seen in other regions of the surface ectoderm. The importance of Pax6 is as a competence factor/protein/transcription factor.Pax6 is important in normal eye, nervous system, pancreas and nose development.Pax6 transcription factor have 2 DNA binding domain.Sox2 and Pax6 express lens crystalline genes. Pax6 will help in differentiation of lens and transcription of crystalline genes. So OV-inducer and Pax6 –is a competence factor.
