It’s no secret the best way to get a proper muzzle velocity for your rifle is with a Chronograph. This will help ensure proper accuracy at distance when used in your ballistic calculator – much more accurate than using the muzzle velocity on the back of your box of ammunition. That said, chronographs aren’t always easy to acquire. Luckily – you’re not completely S.O.L without one. Though this method isn’t going to get you as accurate of results as would a proper chronograph setup, it is likely going to get you much closer than the velocity listed from your ammo manufacturer. Simply measuring the distance between what your drop should theoretically be at 300 yards (Using the information on the box of ammo) and comparing it to the actual recorded drop from your rifle (Which you get by simply shooting at the target) will give you the information needed to solve for the variable of actual muzzle velocity. Plug this new value into your ballistic calculator and you’re off to the races!
