George Washington Vanderbilt, the youngest of William Henry Vanderbilt's' children, conceived, designed and had this house built while still a bachelor in his 20's. Then he married Edith, and their only child, Cornelia, grew up in this house. This shining example of the opulent Gilded Age architecture, in spite of it's size, still had the warmth of a family home about it. I thought it would be helpful to anyone planning a visit to compile & post these few clips. First you will drive onto the estate to get your tickets, whether ordered ahead of time or not. Then even if you don't use the valet parking, you will still park relatively close to the house, to and from which small shuttle buses run all day long. Then after returning to your car, you can drive around the rest of the property, enjoying the extensive landscaping of Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed Central Park in NYC. We ended our day with a visit to the winery on the estate ... the journey on foot to the wine tasting room is worth the visit alone.
