It's different, it's French and it's typically Citroen in the best tradition. That's on the inside and only skin deep. Delve down deeper and it's got the engine and platform from the giant Stellantis group to provide reassurance.

The C3 B-segment hatch has been a massive success in Europe for a number of years and the new model should build on that success. From a styling perspective it has many features that immediately stand out from the crowd. White accents around the foglights, "Airbumps" on the side with more accents and the short, square bonnet that makes visibility from the drivers seat easier, especially when parking.

Top spec Shine models add 16" alloy wheels, body cladding and contrast black roof on the test car plus rear park distance beepers.

On the inside, the Citroen "comfort seating" adds extra layers of foam for extra comfort. I certainly noticed and appreciated this due to my back issues and I'm sure that I would benefit from this on long journeys. Cruise control, 8" infotainment screen with full connectivity, climate control air-conditioning (although I would prefer to be able to operate this without having to use the touchscreen) and 6 airbags are all features on the Shine model.

Powered by the familiar 1.2l 3 cylinder turbo petrol engine giving 81kW and 205Nm to the front wheels through a 6 speed torque convertor automatic transmission. As I discovered at the recent launch, the car is geared for smooth, comfortable driving and not outright performance. The secret is to adopt a relaxed driving style instead of boy-racer. There is still plenty in reserve for overtaking when needed. I never engaged the Sport button, this simply holds the gear ratios and shifts at higher revs if you so desire.

Overall fuel consumption for the test was 7.0l/100km with a best of 6.2 achieved on an open road cruise. This is a good result and most owners should be able to achieve this in everyday driving.

The Shine model is currently priced at R324 900 including a 3 year/ 60 000km service plan.
