Imam W. Deen Mohammed was an American Muslim leader who became the national leader of the Nation of Islam after his father Elijah Muhammad died in 1975. He attempted to remake his father’s radical organization into a mainstream Islamic movement more in line with Sunni Islam. In 1977, the group splintered into the Nation of Islam, led by Louis Farrahkan, and the American Society of Muslims, led by Mohammed. Through the American Society of Muslims, Mohammed continued his advocacy and activism on behalf of Islam and Muslims in the West. Mohammed died in 2008 at age 74.
