This video differentiates the ability of a microorganism to reduce nitrate by producing the enzyme nitrate reductase.

There are two steps:

Step 1 tests for the reduction of nitrate to nitrite.

Step 2 tests for the reduction of nitrate to nitrite and further reduced to a gas such as nitrous oxide, nitrogen or ammonia.
