He was born in Rameswaram, and studied physics and aerospace engineering.

2. Imagine the outcome
He spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator.

3. Be righteous
He mainly worked at the Indian Space Research Organisation.

4. Fight to be you
He came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on missile technology.

5. Break through limitations
He also played a pivotal role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998.

6. Keep learning
He was elected as the 11th President of India in 2002.

7. Be a teacher
He had the support of both the ruling party and the opposition.

8. Work with integrity
He's widely referred to as the "People's President".

9. Follow your dreams
He was a recipient of several awards, including the Bharat Ratna.

10. Inspire others
While delivering a lecture, he died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015.
