The new 2019 Mazda3 has elevated its game, delivering an upscale appearance inside and out, acclaimed driving dynamics, and (finally) all-wheel drive. Is this the best compact car money can buy?

Mazda has redesigned the new Mazda3 sedan and hatchback inside and out. Striking curves on the exterior bely the clean, sharp lines inside. We’re still waiting for the new SkyActiv-X engine to arrive, but the 2019 Mazda3 is bringing all-wheel drive (AWD) for the first time ever.

The 4-cylinder SkyActiv-G engine under the Mazda3’s hood produces 186 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque from 2.5 naturally aspirated liters. As mentioned, you can now buy a Mazda3 with AWD, although front-wheel drive (FWD) come standard (and $1,400 less than AWD trims). An automatic transmission is also offered on every trim, although notably, only the top-level Premium trim can be fitted with a 6-speed manual.

The latest iteration of MazdaConnect graces a 8.8-inch infotainment screen. While previous Mazda3’s offered touch capability on their screens when parked, the newest compact is accessibly only through a rotary controller; this is not a touchscreen. Mazda claims this approach was employed with safety in mind.

Speaking of safety, Mazda’s i-Activsense comes standard on all hatchback trims, and all but the base Sedan trim. This adds automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and driver-attention alerts. Pricing ranges from $21,000 for the base Sedan trim to $28,900 for the Premium Hatchback AWD trim, before additional options and the $920 destination fee.
