Here is the quick answer - look at the sheep. Do you see them organising into a line? When we show them a 'patrol' (dog front to back and back to front covering the length / both ends of the flock) they respond by making a column.

Notice how far away the dog is when they begin organising themselves. This was part of our research looking at the impact of dog walking on sheep - but - it's also an opportunity for us to see the series of regular spatial and temporal movements that are common elements in both sheep and dogs during traditional herding.
