I wasn’t sure about this wood from the beginning. I knew it could have a large void, and so wanted to see how it would look — if it didn’t come completely apart!
First challenge was to decide on mortise vs tenon and then select the best location for the tenon.
You can see in the video how i had just enough wood to get adequate purchase with the chuck to be able to turn safely.
Once i turned the piece around, i had to take light and small cuts as i get closer to the void, in order not to make the bowl fly apart.
Absolutely nerve racking to see the chuck at the base of the bowl as I’m finishing the interior!
Overall i’m pleased with how it turned out, and there is even some nice, subtle figure in the walnut interior that really looks great.

Wood is walnut with live edge, turned on Laguna Revo lathe.
Sanded down to about 800 grit and finished inside and out with Odie’s Oil and wax finish.
