The temporal and spatial summation of postsynaptic potentials and how it occurs is described. It describes how neural networks work in the brain. It is described how different types of ion channels are distributed on the surface of neurons with emphasis on ligand channels. It describes how neuronal function is organized into receptor, integration and motor areas. The concepts of temporal and spatial summation of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials are explained. The differences between postsynaptic potentials and action potentials are explained. Finally, it is shown by what mechanisms the neurons are electrically activated (depolarized).
