Here we have the legendary Icom 756 PRO 3 HF 100KHz to 60MHz radio tranceiver, all mode FM, AM, USB, LSB, CW, RTTY, capable of 100 watts radio frequency power on TX, used by a radio ham for their DX around the world conversations, we embark on confirming the fault, then moving inside we carry out checks in consultation with the service manual & pin the fault down to specific area on the RF Power Amplifier circuit. We remove the suspected components & test them individually narrowing the fault down further, we confirm the resoults with a transistor tester & manually test the BJT device with a multimeter explaining the process, following that we visit the parts bin & get new transistors & install them, we clean up the board & renew the silicone heatsink compound for the transistors & their BIAS sensors. we then follow the alignment procedure to set the DC BIAS for the class AB rf amp drivers & finals, having done that we make final checks then connect the radio to the Rhode & Schwarz CMS33 radio test set then adjust the RF Power steadlily to 100W & check this on all frequency bands fright up to 50MHz having carried out confirmatory tests we then connect the radio tranceiver to an external ex Royal Navy 7m meter tall HF vertical antenna outside, we ustilise the automatic antenna tuner built inside the radio to tune & match to the antenna. We make calls to radio hams AO75PA (SPAIN) & S51DX (SLOVENIA) & ON4LRN (BELGIUM) & N8PC & IKOETA & numerous others to confirm the radio is fully operational live on air.
