John Lennon lived most of his childhood and adolescence, at Mendips, 251 Menlove Avenue, Woolton, with Mimi his aunty, and her husband George Toogood Smith, who had no children of their own. Mimi bought John Lennon short stories and his uncle, a dairyman at his family's farm, bought him a mouth organ and engaged him in solving crossword puzzles On 15 July 1958 Julia Lennon, Johns’s mother went to visit John at his aunty Mimi’s but John was not there. At about 9:30, she crossed Menlove Avenue to the central reservation between two traffic lines, which was lined with hedges that covered disused tram tracks.Moments later, her body was seen "flying through the air"—which landed about 100 feet (30 m) from where she had been hit. Julia Lennon was knocked down and killed by a Standard Vanguard car, driven by an off-duty constable, PC Eric Clague, who was a learner-driver.Clague was acquitted of all charges and given a short suspension from duty.
