Golubac is a small town in eastern Serbia, situated on the right bank of the Danube River. This town is known for its strategic position, located at the widest point of the Danube River just before it flows into the Djerdap Gorge, also known as "The Iron Gates of the Danube. The Iron Gate Park is a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts who love hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing.
Tourists who visit Golubac are often drawn to the nearby Roman archaeological sites and the Derdap National Park, which includes the Iron Gates. Another popular attraction in Golubac is the Golubac Fortress.
Golubac Beach is situated at the town's entrance and is known for its cleanliness, sandy surface, and umbrellas, which create a comfortable environment for visitors. Apart from cherishing nature, you can also enjoy the local cuisine and fish specialities in the restaurants around Golubac.
Golubac Fortress is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Serbia. It dates back to the late 14th century and was first mentioned in historical records in 1335.
Golubac Fortress is an exceptional cultural property. It is part of the Golubac Nature Reserve, an area located at the entrance of the Iron Gate gorge, which is also the entry point into Djerdap National Park.
The fortress is located approximately 4 km (2,5 mi) down the river from Golubac and was built in the late 14th century AD. At the castle location, the river has a width of 6.5 km (4 mi). Throughout its history, the Golubac Fortress has withstood over 120 sieges and attacks. Constructed as the last line of defence, the fortress offers a unique view of the Danube and the Iron Gates of Djerdap.
Golubac fortress has ten towers. Its first and true builder gave it nine towers set in front, back, and lower town, but Turks added another tower and strengthened the fortress with cannon openings. All buildings are square except the Donjon Tower, which has a polygonal base and a cylindrical top, thus the name "Hat Tower."
The region of Golubac is renowned for its diverse and quality fish, with the Danube River and certain parts of the Djerdap Gorge being especially remarkable. Hunting and fishing are popular activities that symbolise Golubac and its surroundings.
Golubac's rich and extensive history and its medieval fortress are an invaluable part of its cultural and historical heritage.
Visitors should come to Golubac to experience the beauty of its nature, including the stunning rocks, forests, the Danube, and the historical spirit that permeates the town.
