Sea trout are one of the most prized forms of our native Trout (Salmo trutta L.) present within Ireland. What is being done to increase our understanding of this enigmatic species? Key biological data is required to help develop sustainable fishery management regimes. This data needs to be collected through coordinated surveys designed to capture representative information across catchments. Basic information on local spawning locations is sometimes absent requiring persistent efforts to identify currently productive areas and to restore previously productive habitats. This short video attempts to describe some steps which are being taken to increase our knowledge base of this form of Trout and to raise awareness of the threats and opportunities for this iconic animal. It is hoped this video can contribute towards constructive debates on the conservation, protection and improvement of Trout and the habitats they rely on.
