Here are six places with spectacular autumn leaves in Aomori Prefecture that are brimming with charm!
Because Aomori Prefecture is located in the northernmost part of Honshu, the autumn leaves season begins slightly earlier, from early October to early November. Aomori is home to such 100 greatest mountains in Japan as Mt. Hakkoda and Mt. Iwaki, and just south of Mt. Hakkoda are Lake Towada and the Oirase Stream. You can't miss the World Heritage-listed Shirakami-Sanchi!

Mt.Hakkoda ( Late September to Late October )
Hakkoda-san (Mt.Hakkoda) is the general name for a group of volcanoes located in the southern part of Aomori Prefecture, and is one of the "100 greatest mountains in Japan. Hakkoda is a mountain with multiple peaks centering on the 1,584-meter-high Mt. Ohdake, and autumn leaves can be enjoyed over a long period of time from the summit to the foot of the mountain. This time we will introduce autumn leaves viewing spots from the middle to the foot of the mountain, such as Jogakura Bridge, Jigokunuma Swamp, and Water Lily Swamp.

Lake Towada ( Mid to late October )
Lake Towada is a caldera lake straddling Aomori and Akita Prefectures, and is designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" by the government. Here are some of the highlights: Hakka Toge, Maiden Statue, Towada Shrine, Kankodai, Utarube, and Nenokuchi.

Oirase Stream ( Late October - Early November )
Oirase Stream is a beautiful 14-km stretch of mountain stream that begins at the mouth of Lake Towada, and has been designated as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" by the Japanese government. And also been selected as one of the "100 Best Autumn Leaves in Japan".
A number of waterfalls fall along the mountain streams, including Choshi Otaki Waterfall, Shiraito Waterfall, and the autumn leaves that color the main stream of Oirase Stream are magnificent.

Shirakami Sanchi: Anmon-no-taki Waterfall ( Mid to late October )
Anmon-no-taki is the collective name for three waterfalls located in the buffer zone of the Shirakami Sanchi World Heritage Site, deep in a forest rich in nature. After an hour's walk along the promenade along the Anmon River, the roar of the falls echoes through the valley.

Shirakami Sanchi: Twelve Lakes ( Late October - Early November )
The Twelve Lakes is the general name for a group of lakes and marshes located at the western foot of the Shirakami Sanchi (mountainous region). 33 lakes and marshes of various sizes are scattered throughout the lush beech forest.
The Juniko lakes are the most easily accessible of all the lakes in the Shirakami Mountains, being only about 4 km from the coast in a straight line, and with relatively little difference in elevation (about 200-250 m), visitors can easily walk around the walking trails around the major lakes.

Apple orchards at the foot of Mt. Iwaki
Aomori Prefecture is the largest producer of apples in Japan, and apple orchards are especially concentrated in the Iwaki Sanroku area. Mt. Iwaki is a 1,625-meter-high mountain located in the western part of Aomori Prefecture, and is one of the "100 greatest mountains in Japan". The combination of the magnificent Mt. Iwaki and apple orchards is a typical Tsugaru region landscape.
