#Hurricane #Milton is undergoing explosive intensification this morning in the Bay of Campeche. The minimum central pressure has fallen incredibly fast, increasing maximum sustained winds. We will have a major hurricane shortly (actually, now). Milton will become a category 4 or 5 hurricane tonight as it passes dangerously close to the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The dangerous hurricane will turn northeast on Tuesday and begin trekking toward its eventual destination of #Florida. Unfortunately, another hazardous situation is developing for the Gulf-facing portion of the Florida Coast. Not even two weeks after Helene, another destructive storm is bearing down on Florida.

Milton looks to take a more southern track than Helene, posing a significant risk to Tampa Bay and other communities. Wind shear and dry air will hopefully weaken late Tuesday and Wednesday before landfall, but this will also expand the wind field. Regardless of the final landfall intensity, a life-threatening storm surge, dangerous hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, and flash flooding are all high-impact hazards to Florida with landfall on Wednesday.

The only impacts from Milton on Texas will be dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding during high tides. Our weather will remain seasonably hot and dry over the next seven days. A modest cool front will help temperatures cool slightly across the eastern quarter of Texas beginning Tuesday, but the remainder of Texas will continue to top out in the 80s and 90s into next week. A modest blessing is that humidity values are low, so our overnight temperatures remain comfortable. A developing flash drought will result in increased danger of grass fires.
