This 2017 BMW 116d M-Sport is a sought after LCI model (the facelifted version) which combines an enviable specification with low running costs. This model of 1 series offers sporty 3 door looks, an inspiring drive with 3 selectable driver modes and that desirable M-Sport pack that includes 18" alloy wheels, body enhancements and sports seats among over extras. The 3 door, LCI model is (in my opinion) the prettiest of all 1 series models, especially when kitted out in full M-Sport trim.

Like all BMW's, this car is well built, comfortable and practical. Finished in metallic red, the M-sport specification means you get plenty of creature comforts and the added appeal of the sporting 3 door body clothed with M-Sport body enhancements. The muscular lines give the car a ground hugging stance with distinctive twin-5 spoke alloy wheels ensure the compact 1 series has a menacing and sporty look. Our car is finished in a classy looking metallic red, which is among the best colours to carry off this sporting image. Inside there is a sporty comfortable and well equipped interior with climate controlled air-conditioning and cruise control complete with a speed limiter function. Our car also has the sought after navigation system and a reverse cam as well as parking sensors. It is highly practical, with 5 seats and a decent boot of - Essentially there is as much room as in its 5 door sibling so its ideal for small families as well as those who want a sporty hatch and I personally find the larger door of the 3 door makes it much more accessible than its 3 door sibling - It also looks better!


►►HOW DOES IT DRIVE?◄◄

They don't label themselves "The ultimate driving machine" for nothing!! BMW are most famous for being a superb drivers car. The 1 series may be compact 3 door hatch, and this may be the economical diesel model, but is in every way a true BMW and is rear wheel drive, making it ride and handle much better than its rivals and giving it a far more inspiring drive. You sit in supportive, yet comfortable seats with a sporty 3 spoke steering wheel which has a tactile feel. Our 1 series has push button start, and even before you press the start button you get a sense of power and control. The driving position on a 1-series has always been one of my favorites with virtually no wheel arch intrusion meaning you are able to sit dead straight with no off-set to the pedals. This uncompromised driving position is typical of BMW's constant drive for perfection in every detail of their cars.

Power comes from a 114bhp, 3 cylinder diesel model, which is a marked improvement over the earlier 4 cylinder model - 0-60 mph takes just 10 seconds with a top speed of 124mph. The turn in is sharp and responsive with the taut chassis being aided by cornering brake control and BMW's DTC stability and traction control along with responsive ABS brakes. With perfect weight distribution, rear wheel drive and an advanced traction control system, the 116d strikes a perfect balance, being great fun but also superbly safe and predictable. There are 3 selectable driver modes, you can tailor this cars steering and throttle response to suit your mood. The change on the 6 speed manual geabox feels quick and sporty with a short throw and an engaging feel that will please the keen driver. This is the last mid-sized hatchback to feature a fine rear wheel drive chassis, and this combined with sharp and responsive steering make this one of the finest drives in its class.

BMW's superb driving position ensures you will always feel comfortable behind the wheel and the car offers excellent support with its comfortable multi-adjustable sports seats - Our 109k mile example has no adverse wear and has clearly been well looked after. I love the high gloss black trim in this car which gives a really nice high quality feel to the interior. Its a car that really gives you a feel-good factor which is missing in rivals.
