Is stress harmful to your thyroid? Can it cause a thyroid condition, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism?
We deal with stress every day of our lives. Our stress levels are sometimes out of control and can be root of thyroid imbalances.
NORMAL STRESS RESPONSE is not bad and rather it is life saving response.
however it should get activated only in emergency.
In an emergency, stress can save your life.
body recognises stress as an alarm and pours stress hormones into your bloodstream. These hormones drive up your heart rate and blood pressure, blood sugar. giving you the extra boost of energy and strength you need to survive each threatening situation.
cortisol, the main hormone produced in response to stress.
Nowadays stressors are never-ending. The constant release of hormones can wreak havoc on essential organs, including your thyroid.
Stress and Thyroid
Effect of stress on thyroid function is complex. stress increases production of the hormone cortisol, which is produced by the adrenal glands.
cortisol can inhibit secretion of TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) from the pituitary gland. It can stimulate the thyroid to work harder to create sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone leading to partial suppression of thyroxine, So there is deficiency of thyroid hormones. Cortisol levels may affect thyroid hormone metabolism. Stress causes thyroid disease.
If you don't have thyroid issue but positive family history and if you are stressed than It can act as one of the strong environmental factors and affects the immune system either directly or indirectly through the nervous and endocrine systems.
These immune modulations may contribute to the development of autoimmunity as well as the susceptibility to autoimmune disease in genetically predisposed individuals and makes you more vulnerable for thyroid autoimmunity.

Stressful events like job loss with severe financial impact, Loss of loved one family friend or pet, Divorce or breakup of relationship
causes PTSD and person who had been diagnosed with PTSD had a 58% higher chance of developing an autoimmune disease like Graves or hashimotos disease.

Who came first ? Thyroid imbalance or stress ?
it is difficult to say that. In fact, both can lead to each other
Symptoms can be confusing at times.
If you feel worn down, your mood changes on a dime, and you're gaining weight, does that mean you're stressed, or do you have hypothyroidism
These are symptoms of both stress and hypothyroidism than talk to your doctor to rule out hypothyroidism (an under active thyroid).
These things can feed each other—stress can aggravate hypothyroidism, and you can be stressed because of the hypothyroidism symptoms.

When you have either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, you become more sensitive to both mental and physical stresses, as the excessively high or low levels of thyroid hormones affect how the whole body reacts to stress.
stress could potentially worsen symptoms of thyroid disease which, in turn, can cause more stress.
An extreme amount of physical stress like heart attack, Accident, Infection can cause a potentially life-threatening thyroid storm if you have untreated hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease. A thyroid storm is a rare but serious condition, so call your doctor immediately if you have high fever, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, tremors, and vomiting and/or diarrhoea—all symptoms of a thyroid storm.

Stress can affect memory and Cognitive functions. People with hypothyroidism who are also under stress may experience more severe and long-lasting memory impairment and cognitive issues.
Stress management is important for anyone. It should be part of a patient’s treatment plan.
