Next to the canal in Oswaldtwistle, near Accrington, are the remains of a number of coke ovens that belonged to Aspen Colliery. These ovens turned coal to coke, and this was then shipped off down the canal in a barge.

The Ovens are known locally as the Fairy Caves, though it also reminded me of The Shire in The Hobbit. They are one of the best examples of surviving coke ovens in the UK, despite being out of use for nearly 100 years.

Oswaldtwistle has also had a lot of publicity recently after the tragic events of hometown boy Jay Slater during the Summer of 2024. It is obvious the community is still reeling from the devastating news, and we send the friends, family and hometown our sympathies and positive thoughts. RIP Jay.
