Join Dr Bolu and shocked pet parents as they discover whether or not they’re feeding their dogs the right amount of food.

Spoiler alert, most of them are over or under feeding their dogs. Yikes.

A lot of pet parents use guesswork to decide how much they should be feeding their dog, usually by measure of cups and handfuls. Unfortunately, this often causes them to overfeed or underfeed their pup.

Like us humans, each dog is unique and there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach when it comes to portion sizes. A dog’s breed, weight, age and activity level all contribute to determining exactly how much food they require per day.

Many commercial dog foods will provide portion guidelines on the label, but these are solely based on a dog’s weight and do not take into account any other important factors. They’re not a reliable measurement.

If your dog is staring at you, longing for more food even after their meal, don’t be fooled. Many dogs are just greedy by nature and would happily eat endless amounts of food. We know their adorable faces are hard to resist, but it’s important for their health and happiness that they are fed the correct amount.

Treats and table scraps all contribute to a dog’s daily calorie intake and are often the reason why dogs pile on the pounds. You should avoid table scraps entirely and feed treats sparingly.

When you sign up to Butternut Box, we ask you a few important questions about your dog, including their breed, weight, age, activity level and any allergies they may have. Our super clever algorithm then uses this information to calculate exactly how much food your dog needs per day. It even leaves some room for treats if your dog is a good boy or girl, which of course they are.
