Israel has assured its ally the United States that a planned retaliatory attack on Iran won't target Tehran’s nuclear or oil facilities, as per a report. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has assured the senior White House figures including President Biden of limited counterstrike on Iran, reported The Washington Post.
The reported pledge was made during a call between US President Joe Biden and Netanyahu last week, two officials familiar with the matter told the Post. Israel’s retaliation is also said to have factored in conversations in recent days between US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant.
Since Iran’s latest missile barrage on Israel on Oct 1, the Middle East has braced for Israel’s ‘promised response.’
The White House fears that Israel’s retaliation could trigger a head-on military confrontation between the two arch-foes. Analysts say that Netanyahu’s reported assurance suggests a more limited counterstrike aimed at preventing a full-scale war.
