The 320 has two different engine configurations: a Cat 3116 or 3066. Both are turbocharged diesel engines producing 128 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system with a power and work mode selector, pilot activated control, horsepower summation control, a high level of operator comfort, large cross-section design for the boom and stick, a modified X-shaped carbody, increased stick and bucket pressure, and increased pressure in the travel circuit. It is available with a standard, narrow or long undercarriage.

Standard undercarriage units were manufactured in Japan, with a 3XM, 7GJ, 7WK, or 8LK serial number prefix; in Belgium, with a 4ZJ prefix; and in Indonesia, with an 8HL prefix.

Narrow undercarriage units were manufactured in Japan, with a 1XM prefix; and in Belgium, with a 6KM or 9WG prefix.

Long undercarriage units were manufactured in Japan, with a 1KL, 1TL, 2DL, 4BK, 4JM, 8HJ, or 9KK prefix; and in Belgium, with a 3XK prefix. All long undercarriage units have a large lifting capacity.

The 1KL, 8LK, and 9KK units have in-line mounted pumps.

The 3XM, 7WK, 8LK, and 9KK units have modified cabs.

Production of 1TL and 7WK ended in 1992; 4BK ended in 1993.

In 1993 Caterpillar modified the cab on two Belgian units, beginning with a 3XK00822 and 4ZJ00454 prefix.

Production of 1KL, 7GJ, 8LK, and 8HL ended in 1994.

Cat introduced a new Indonesian unit in 1995, with a 2BN prefix.

Production of 8HJ ended in 1995; 1XM, 2DL, 3XM, 4JM, 9KK, and 2BN ended in 1996.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 32,200 Caterpillar 320 hydraulic excavators have been produced.
