A brief anthropological approach to the figure of the cowboy and the characteristics of the #western film genre. Western films develop basically from the savagery vs civilization dichotomy that can be traced back to the essays of Montesquieu and Rousseau.

As a balance between these two poles, the figure of the "lone ranger" appears, the "man without a name" in short; of a romantic hero who walks on the fringes of society.
