On March 12, 2022, in the afternoon near Racetrack Road and Mar Walt Drive, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies stopped a black Dodge Charger for having overly dark tinted windows. The vehicle, occupied by the driver and a 17-year-old passenger named Darius Wingate, was initially pulled over for a routine check. Upon requesting identification, Wingate claimed not to have any, leading to suspicion when the name he provided did not match any records in Florida's license database, suggesting he might have given a false name. The driver received a warning, while closer attention was focused on Wingate.
