Another aspect of the nature of the Self is 'Chit' or Consciousness. Consciousness is that life principle which keeps our body and mind alert. This aspect of Atman is the topic of this episode.

A proud Balaki reaches King Ajatashatru and starts teaching him the knowledge of the Self. However, King Ajatashatru's irrefutable arguments leave him speechless. Accepting King Ajatashatru as his guru (teacher) he starts learning from him.

The Sutradhar (anchor) expands this thinking through the story from Kenopanishad of the victory by the Devatas (Gods). Following their victory, the Devatas start believing that it is because of their might that they have attained victory. At that time a Yaksha comes to their gate and asks the Devatas if they were really the cause of their victory. Each of the Devatas are tested and fail. Finally, Indra himself comes to face the Yaksha but instead faces the ‘knowledge power’ of the Life Principle.

Key Insights:
The Search for Brahman (The Supreme Consciousness): The episode portrays a dialogue between King Ajaatashatru and a learned Brahmin, where the king seeks knowledge of Brahman, the ultimate consciousness that governs life. It emphasizes that Brahman is the force behind all activities of the mind, body, and senses. It is beyond sensory perception and is the cause of life and vitality in all beings.

Illumination Through Inner Knowledge: Ajaatashatru challenges conventional knowledge about the sun, moon, and elements like fire, asking for deeper insights beyond their physical existence. The moral here is that true wisdom transcends superficial understanding of the world and delves into the consciousness that animates it.

Consciousness and Sleep: The episode discusses the concept of sleep, illustrating that even when a person is asleep, consciousness remains present, sustaining life. This implies that consciousness is not dependent on the waking state and is an ever-present principle, independent of the physical body.

Humility in Knowledge: Although Ajaatashatru begins the conversation thinking he is knowledgeable, by the end, he realizes that true wisdom involves acknowledging what one does not know. The dialogue reflects the Upanishadic teaching that knowledge is not about accumulation of facts but about realizing the limitations of the intellect and surrendering to a higher understanding.

True Power Comes from Brahman: Another part of the episode depicts the Devas (gods) celebrating victory over the Asuras (demons), only to realize that their power and success were not their own but came from Brahman. This signifies that all accomplishments in life are possible due to the underlying divine consciousness.

Moral of the Episode:
The ultimate moral of the episode is that Brahman, or the Supreme Consciousness, is the source of all life and power. It governs the mind, senses, and the universe, and realizing this truth leads to liberation (Moksha). True wisdom comes not from external knowledge but from understanding and experiencing this inner consciousness, which transcends the material world. The episode teaches humility, spiritual inquiry, and the recognition that divine consciousness is the essence of all existence.
