Pwllheli has a population a pinch above 4000 people, and for many is their entrance point into the Lleyn Peninsula
A quick look at 'The Rough Guide to Wales' describes it thus: ''The capital of the Llyn, Pwllheli (pronounced something like 'Pooth-heli') is a solid little place that fails to live up to either its seaside location or its illustrious history.'' It goes on ''.... the only real reason to visit it is to change buses - this is the transport hub of the peninsula.'' OUCH! A ridiculous and unworthy summary really - probably not enough posh restaurants or theatres for them I suppose?
In truth, the town centre isn't anything special in itself, particularly if you are passing through in slow traffic. However it is a SEASIDE resort. Clue is in the name!
There are two magnificent beaches, a harbour and an attractive marina, which is why most people would wish to visit. For some, perhaps, it is because the railway line goes no further and they've presumably enjoyed the marvellous seascapes of the Cambrian Coast Line. Trains come and go on a two-hourly basis.
Of the bus services, there are local options along with a regular service to Caernarfon (every hour). The popular Aberdaron and Nefyn/Morfa Nefyn are also well served
Many people are likely to head for the South Beach, but I would strongly recommend a look at the Glan-y Don Beach also
If you have time, great views over the town, coast and Lleyn Peninsula can be viewed from the high ground of Pen-y Garn. It is a short walk from the town centre - it would probably take 20 mins if you knew the way. For those so inclined there is a golf course, too
For anyone visiting - have a great time!
Tony
