At the southern end of the village of Guillestre, just at a traffic circle, the northern, approximately 20 km long ascent to the Col de Vars begins. The D902 road is very well developed along the entire route and easy to drive on. In addition to the main town of Vars, there are a few smaller villages to pass through first, where the speed limit is 30 km/h. Depending on the time of year, you can expect a higher volume of traffic in the ski resorts of Les Claux, for example.

The pass forms the border between the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in the south and Hautes-Alpes in the north. The pass road connects the towns of Barcelonette and Jausiers in the south with the village of Guillestre in the north. To the north, just a few kilometers below the top of the pass, lies the village of Vars, which forms the center of a large, popular ski area.

The road lies in the department of Hautes-Alpes and there in the province of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
