Missing a tooth can be harmful for your oral health. Each tooth has an important role to play. It goes without saying that you would immediately rush to a dentist to replace that front missing tooth. But what about that one missing tooth present at the back of your mouth?

One of the best and the common option available these days is the DENTAL IMPLANTS.

A DENTAL IMPLANT is like a screw, usually made from titanium used to replace missing teeth.
It mimics the root of the natural tooth.
Unlike dentures, implants are not removed for overnight soaking in cleaning.

1) How does a dental implant work?
Implant is inserted into the bone. The healing process of bone (osseointegration) takes place. Dental abutment is placed on the dental implant. Ceramic / PFM crown is placed which replaces the real tooth.

2) Is it appropriate for everyone ?
Most people who are in good general and oral health a good candidate and can enjoy a predictable and highly successful outcome. Special attention attention is given to cases with -
-Diabetes mellitus
-Periodontitis gum disease poor hygiene
-Smokers
-Osteoporosis (patients taking medication~ IV bisphosphonates)
-Leukaemia
-Improper jawbone condition.

3) Is implant surgery painful ?
- In majority of cases implant surgery is very well tolerated with mild post surgical discomfort.
-Most people will feel discomfort similar to do the extraction of the world.
-It is performed under local anaesthesia therefore pain should not be felt during the procedure.
-Post-surgical pain is managed with medications such as antibiotics and painkillers.
-Swelling is considered normal. A cold ice pack is placed on the skin over the area of surgery to reduce swelling.

4) Do implant prosthesis look like natural teeth?
Often crowns on dental implants will appear very natural and quite similar to your natural teeth.

5) Do implants function as naturalTeeth?
Dental implants remain fixed in the board and allow for normal function patients with dental implants enjoy comfortable going with taste and texture been the same as natural teeth.

6) What is my commitment once I have received implants?
-Annual dental checkup appointment will be required.
-Effective practice of oral hygiene with brushing and flossing and using interproximal brushes twice a day

*NOTE -
if proper care is not taken dental implants have a risk of developing a condition called Peri-implantitis ~inflammation of the gums and bones surrounding the implant.
