Primitive cordage is one of those ancient survival skills known to every primitive culture in the past several thousand years. It's uses are infinite and, with a little know how, it's quite easy to make. In this bushcraft survival video I'll show you, step by step, how to process the natural fibers of Yucca with the retting process. Retting plant fibers is the process of using water and microbes to break down the cellular tissues and pectin surrounding bast-fiber bundles and facilitate the separation of the fiber from the plant. Retting is a relatively slow process but the resulting fibers are much cleaner and superior to scraping. Once our fibers are processed, I'll show how to reverse twist two ply cordage to make a primitive bow string.
