Albuterol | Salbutamol | Ventolin – Side Effects, Uses, Mechanism of Action, Dosage, Warnings
Albuterol (Salbutamol), commonly known by brand names like Ventolin, Airomir, and Proventil, is a bronchodilator used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in individuals with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Its mechanism of action involves stimulating beta2-adrenergic receptors in the airway smooth muscles, leading to muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. Common side effects include headache, nervousness, throat or nasal irritation, and muscle aches, while severe side effects can include chest pain, irregular heartbeats, severe headache, dizziness, fainting, worsening breathing problems, and allergic reactions. Dosages vary but typically involve 2 puffs from an inhaler every 4 to 6 hours or 2.5 mg via nebulizer 3 to 4 times a day. Interactions with beta-blockers, diuretics, digoxin, and certain antidepressants can affect its efficacy or increase side effects. Warnings include potential cardiovascular effects, paradoxical bronchospasm, and hypersensitivity reactions. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
