IWCB plays “Triumphal March” from Aïda by Guiseppe Verdi (arranged by Franco Cesarini).

Giuseppe Verdi’s grand opera Aïda sees the old kingdoms of Egypt and Ethiopia at war, and tells the tragic story of a love that crosses these lines. The celebratory “Triumphal March” accompanies a spectacular scene in which the victorious Egyptian army returns home in a grand parade before the Pharoah.

The opera was commissioned for the opening of the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo, but this was not to be, as the premiere was delayed for two years — the costumes and sets for the production were made in Paris, and were stuck there when the city came under siege during the Franco-Prussian war. Aïda finally premiered in Cairo on Christmas Eve of 1871.
