As we enter the state of Missouri again after just over a year, we get to see what lies beyond its easternmost reaches and witness for the first time the waters of the famed river from which this state gets its name. The Missouri River is entrenched in history and significance, serving as a navigable medium of transportation for early pioneers and traders en route towards far off lands. As Missouri achieved statehood in the early 1800s, an area of land in the state's geographic center along the aforementioned river's bank was selected to become its capital city. Named in honor of the 3rd president whose decisions transformed the fate of the American frontier, Jefferson City stands today not as the largest nor most prominent among other well-known Missourian cities (think St. Louis) but nevertheless manages to create a balance between charming "quiet American riverside city" and orderly state capital. An outstanding work of neoclassical architecture, the state capitol is the iconic must-see centerpiece of the city and can be located with ease from anywhere within the urban area. Other major interest points in Jeff City include the old landing point alongside the river, still intact with its fascinating buildings from the antebellum days, and the Missouri State Penitentiary, a facility once harboring notorious criminals of the past and one of the oldest prisons in this part of the country. Be as pleasantly surprised as I was with the under-appreciated appeal of Mid-Missouri!
