Fantasmagorie is a 1908 animated film realized by Émile Cohl:    • Playlist  
It is considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon. In order to create steady movement, Cohl placed each drawing on a plate of glass illuminated from beneath, and then he traced the image onto the next sheet of paper, making slight changes in the figures.
